Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a visual novel featured on FunBrain. It was created in 2004, as an attempt to create a free webcomic for FunBrain users. It has had over 80,000,000 visits as of 2009, read by 70,000 kids a day. The first three books of the print series originate from the visual novel. The visual novel features stories not in the print series.

Differences between visual novel and print series Edit

  • In the online version Fregley's name is spelled "Fregly".
    * In the online version Fregley/Fregly doesn't go to school like he does in the print series, and the kid that Greg has to wrestle instead of Fregley/Fregly is this kid nicknamed "Stinky Williams".
    * In the online version, Greg's mother is named "Ann" instead of "Susan" like in the print series.
    * In the online version, Greg's soccer coach is named "Mr. Keith" instead of "Mr. Litch" like in the print series.
    * In the online version Kenny Keith is the soccer coach's son, unlike in the print series, and in the print series Leon Ricket replaces part of Kenny's role in the online version.
    * The print series removes several characters from the online version like Greg's old friend, Ben and Grandpa's "lady-friend", Maurlene.
    * In the online version the Hills are named "the Matthews". Holly and Heather are also named "Piper" and "Lori" and have slightly different hairstyles than they do in the print series. Another note is that Piper goes to a different school than Greg and another fact about the family is that she and Lori have two other sisters that don't exist in the print series. Mr. Matthews is also a soccer coach.
    * There is a comic by Sara Choo called "Pikki and Matz" that is in the online version but not in the print series (Sara Choo also doesn't exist in the print series). Instead of Girls Rule, Xtreme Sk8ters, and Dumb Teachers, Greg hides Pikki and Matz underneath all the other comics.
    * In the print series, the Heffleys don't hire a maid, like they do in the online version.
    * In the print series many trademarks are removed from the online version. For example, the game console Rowley owns in the online version is a PlayStation but in the print series it's just a nameless game console, and in the online version some kids are said to be playing Game Boys, but in the print series they're just said to be video games.
    * In the online version Herbie Reamer and his goons are the ones who make Rowley eat the Cheese, but in the print series instead of them it's the teenagers in the pickup truck (Herbie Reamer and his goons are also characters that don't exist in the print series).
    * The drawings in the online version are very dirty. The drawings in the print series are better.
    * In the online version, Manny calls Greg "Pootie" instead of "Ploopy" like in the print series.
    * In the online version Frank reads the poems in books by Shel Silverstien to Greg, but in the print series he just reads The Giving Tree to Greg.
    * In the print series Greg and Frank don't set up a trap to catch the snack thief like they do in the online version.
    * Unlike in the print series, in the online version Greg writes every day, and the days aren't started the same way. In the online version each day is started by saying the day of the week and the day of the month and always starts at the top of the page, but in the print series each day is started by simply just saying the day of the week, and starts anywhere in the page, and in the online version whenever Greg writes about a holiday he says the day of the week, the day of the month, and then the name of the holiday, but in the print series he simply just says the name of the holiday.
    * In the print series Frank doesn't hear about Bishop Garrigan High School like he does in the online version.
    * In the online version the Snellas are named "the Smedleys". Shane has the same first name, but Shawn is named "Max" and Seth doesn't even have a name yet.
    * In the print series Greg gets put in a seat next to Alex Aruda in Pre-Algebra, but in the online version it happens in Social Studies.
    * Christopher Ziegel is named "Larry Ziegel" in the online version.
    * Instead of Christmas like in the print series, in the online version Rowley gets Greg a big wheel for his birthday.
    * In the print series Greg's birthday happens in the summer, but in the online version Greg's birthday happens during the school year.
    * In the online version instead of Rodrick, Bill Walter owns Loded Diper's van. All Rodrick has is a normal car.
    * In the online version instead of Summer, Greg goes to swim practice during winter, and he goes with Rowley unlike in the print series, and the boys' bathroom has a light that switches on and off depending on positions of objects unlike in the print series.
    * In the online version Rowley goes on vacation in the summer and during Spring break, but in the print series he only goes in the summer.
    * Collin Lee has a much bigger role in the online version than in the print series when he goes to Rowley's house (In the print series Rowley replaces part of Colin's role in the online version). He even looks a whole lot different, his look is almost identical to Alex Aruda's. His last name also isn't revealed.
    * In the print series Greg always spells "Grandpa" correctly, but in the online version sometimes he spells it correctly and sometimes he spells it "Grampa".
    * In the print series Frank wants Greg to go to Spag Union For the whole summer vacation, but in the online version he wants him to go for four years.
    * In the online version the Fullers' dog, Princess is named Stevie (Princess is a female and Stevie is a male).
    * In the online version Frank's boss, Mr. Warren is named Mr. Swann and is not his boss.
    * In the online version part of Mrs. Craig's role in the print series is replaced by another woman named Mrs. Jordan.
    * In the online version Manny stuffs a chocolate chip cookie in Greg's Walkman's disc drive instead of his video game system's disc drive like in the print series.
    * The really embarrassing thing that happenes to Greg over the summer has a lot more to it in the print series than it does in the online version.
    * In the online version Darren Walsh is named "Darnell Washington".
    * In the print series Manny is two to four years old, but in the online version he's five years old.
    * In the print series Greg doesn't get home late for dinner or clean Susan's/Ann's car with Brillo in which he ends up getting in trouble for like in the online version.
    * In the online version Chirag Gupta Has a different hairstyle than he does in the print series.
    * In the online version the game, "Magick and Monsters" is called "Dungeons and Dragons".
    * In the print series Rowley has to miss the talent show when he breaks his toe, but in the online version he has to miss it when he breaks his hand.
    * In the online version the Woodley brothers are named "the Newson brothers" and their first names are "Garett" and "Chip" instead of "Darren" and "Marcus" like in the print series.
    * In the online version Jason Brill is named "Otha Harris".
    * In the online version "watercress salad", the awful thing that Grandpa Heffley makes is called "watercrest salad".
    * In the print series when Susan and Frank know that Rodrick would throw a party while they leave their sons behind in the house they just decide to stay home, but in the online version instead of that they pull a trick. They tell their sons that they need to do an errand at Grandma or Grandpa's house and that they need to come with them and when they get there they just run out and leave them behind.
    * In the online version Greg thinks about how great it would be if he had a bionic eye instead of a glass eye like in the print series.
    * In the online version the woman from the PTA is named "Mrs. Gretchen" instead of "Mrs. Gillman" like in the print series.
    * The online version takes place during Greg's seventh grade year, but the print series takes place during Greg's sixth grade to eighth grade years.
    * In the online version Rodrick is a junior at Crossland High School, but in the print series he is a junior and a senior at that school.
    * The print series never tells about Manny watching Sesame Street like the online version does.
    * The print series never tells about the Peachy Breeze ice cream commercial like the online version does.
    * In the online version Uncle Charlie is named "Uncle Freddie".
    * In the print series Greg never goes to CCD like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series the Heffleys don't go to Uncle Gary's wedding like they do in the online version.
    * In the print series Grandpa doesn't have a story about Greg not going on the river pool at the water park like he does in the online version.
    * In the online version Greg says "cute girls" instead of "hot girls" like in the print series.
    * In the print series Manny dumps unfinished corn flakes in his plastic toilet, but in the online version he dumps unfinished Cheerios in the toilet.
    * Unlike in the print series, in the online version Chirag Gupta and his family attept to move again and they don't change their minds.
    * In the online version Trista moves into Chirag Gupta's old house after his family's second attempt to move, but in the print series she just moves into some random house.
    * Unlike in the print series, in the online version Greg and Rowley let Rowley's father know that they are building a haunted house and the guy who doesn't believe the is Mr. Snella/Mr. Smedley.
    * In the online version when Greg and Rowley have kids come to their haunted house they change the admission to $1.50 instead of $2.00 like in the print series.
    * In the online version when Greg and Rowley make it back to Rowley's house after putting up the flyers for the haunted house it's 2:00 instead of 2:30 like in the print series.
    * In the online version the first "Zoo-Wee Mama" comic strip says "P.S. she broke her back" instead of "P.S. she is dead" like in the print series.
    * In the online version Aunt Loretta is Greg's great-aunt, but in the print series she's just Greg's aunt.
    * In the online version Susan/Ann used to teach kindergarten instead of preschool like in the print series.
    * In the print series TV is in two caps but in the online version it's uncapitalized and has a period after each letter.
    * Several words that are in all caps in the print series are not in all caps in the online version.
    * In the online version they play Zippidy-Doo-Da at the Valetine's Dance instead of Hokey-Pokey like in the print series.
    * In the online version when Greg makes Manny's apple juice come out of his nose Susan/Ann says "He could've choked to death" insead of "You could've killed him" like in the print series.
    * In the online version when Greg replies to Rowley's grandfather at his birthday party he uses the word "around" instead of "alive" like in the print series.
    * In the online version the Cheese has been sitting on the blacktop since the previous autumn instead of the previous spring like in the print series.
    * In the online version, at the Snellas'/Smedleys' half-birthday party, Manny throws the blanket into a ditch instead of a tree branch like in the print series.
    * In the online version most of the narration by Greg is different than in the print series (Sometimes it causes new pictures).
    * In the online version, when Frank finds some factual errors in Rodrick's assignment, he says "Benjamin Franklin didn't actually fight in Vietnam" instead of "Abraham Lincoln didn't write To Kill a Mockingbird" like in the print series.
    * In the online version Greg reads "Encyclopedia Brown" instead of "Sherlock Sammy" like in the print series.
    * In the online version in the mystery book Sherlock Sammy/Encyclopedia Brown says Mr. Beasley's first mistake is not converting "feet] to meters" instead of "Celsius to Fahrenheit" like in the print series.
    * In the online version when Greg sends a note back to Mamadou Montpierre he says he's sure acquaintance "only has one E in it" instead of saying he's sure it "doesn't have a C in it" like in the print series.

    * In the online version Greg's "Mr. Shropsharp" story is a TV show design and is called "Mr. Lockerman".

    * Some sets of pictures that are vertical in the print series are horizontal in the online version.
    * Many things happen at different times in the online version than in the print series.
    * In the print series they don't cut out the apple-throwing scene from the school play like they do in the online version.
    * In the print series Greg doesn't go to the dentist like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series there is no book of "Gregory and Rodrick from A to Z" like there is in the online version.
    * In the online version Frank's mistake of mailing in Rodrick's second grade photo happens when Rodrick is in eighth grade instead of tenth grade like in the print series, and Rodrick's problem that day is shaving off his eyebrow and some of his hair instead of being sick like in the print series.
    * In the online version when Greg writes to Grandma saying "I hate you Gramma" he does it because Grandma won't let him have ice cream twice a day, but in the print series he does it because Grandma won't let him have ice cream before dinner.
    * In the online version Rodrick doesn't go to Grandpa's house with Greg like he does in the print series.
    * In the print series Greg doesn't get stomach cramps from eating old candy like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series Greg's school doesn't have a Christmas gift exchange like it does in the online version.
    * The print series never tells about the woods like the online version does.
    * In the print series Rodrick and Rowley don't get rockets like they do in the online version.
    * In the online version when Greg and the other kids play the "loss of hearing" joke on Chirag Gupta they talk about football instead of soccer like in the print series.
    * In the online version Mr. Huff's name is not revealed like it is in the print series, and Greg gets stuck with him in homeroom instead of history like in the print series.
    * In the online version Rodrick's old history paper is longer than it is in the print series.
    * In the online version Greg's report about chimpanzees is much different than it is in the print series and also replaces Greg's report about mooses in the print series.
    * In the print series whenever Greg shows what he or someone else writes on a piece of paper separate from his journal he uses black but in the online version he sometimes uses blue, red, or green.
    * In the online version part of Holly Hills'/Piper Matthews' role in the print series is replaced by a girl named "Andrea Trotter".
    * There are two other dogs that are in the online version and not in the print series besides Sweetie. One of them is the Warrens'/Swanns' dog, Killer, and the other one is a dog named Bridget that plays with a stuffed animal named "Ellie" and is owned by Aunt Cakey, another character that doesn't exist in the print series.
    * Some things poeple say are different in the online version than in the print series.
    * Some words used for sounds are different in the online version than in the print series.
    * In the print series Susan/Ann doesn't go to a night class like she does in the online version.
    * In the print series Greg and Frank don't help an old lady like they do in the online version.
    * In the online version the Snellas/Smedleys want to get a clip to turn in to "America's Funniest Home Videos" instead of "America's Funniest Families" like in the print series.
    * In the print series Fregley/Fregly doesn't go to Greg's house like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series Greg doesn't decide to go to Rowley's house through the sewer to avoid walking by Fregley/Fregly like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series Manny doesn't make up jokes like he does in the online version.
    * In the print series Susan doesn't get left behind at a gas station by the rest of the Heffley family like she does in the online version.
    * In the print series the Heffleys (minus Susan) don't go to Red Lobster for dinner like they do in the online version.
    * In the print series Susan doesn't go to a night class like she does in the online version.
    * In the print series Greg doesn't design a TV show called "Jerome, the Man with Incredibly Red Lips" like he does in the online version (The Do-it-Yourself Book doesn't count, and in that book it's a comic instead of a TV show design like in the online version).
    * In the online version Natasha, the girl that Greg writes to on Valentine's Day, has a different hairstyle than in the print series.
    * In the print series when Frank almost finds out about the bathroom door Rodrick is paranoid and Greg isn't but in the online version Rodrick and Greg are both paranoid.
    * The print series never tells about Saint Patrick's Day like the online version does.
    * In the print series when Manny throws the blanket at the Snellas'/Smedleys' half-birthday party he throws it in a tree and when Greg tries to rescue it Mr. Snella/Mr. Smedley videos Greg with his pants down, but in the online version Manny throws the blanket in a low ditch and when Greg tries to rescue it he gets stung by bees and Mr. Snella/Mr. Smedley videos Greg being carried home.
    * In the online version the furnace room is called "the workroom".
    * In the online version the two boy scout] troops in Greg's neighborhood are troops 1020 and 42 instead of troops 24 and 133 like in the print series.
  • * In the online version a few things that happen at certain times are a lot different than in the print series.

Errors in visual novel Edit

  • On the first page of Day 191 Sweetie the dog is seen to have broken through the door that didn't have a knob on it, but even if the door doesn't have a lock you still have to turn the knob.
  • In the first couple of drawings of Uncle Joe he is missing his mouth.
  • The third page of Day 22 is missing.
  • On the last page of Day 18 Greg says he will "give the teachers some truthfulness tomorrow". However, the next day is Saturday, and there would be no school, so he must be thinking of Monday.
  • Day 54 is a Saturday. However, it says "Friday" on the first page of it.
